BRETT C. POWELL joined the firm in 2002 and is an associate in the firm's appellate division. A native of Miami, Brett received his Bachelor of Arts degree from The Florida State University in 1990, and graduated cum laude from the University of Miami School of Law, where he was a Dean’s Merit Scholar and an intern with Federal Magistrate Judge William Turnoff.
While at the University of Miami School of Law, Brett served as an Academic Achievement Program Dean's Fellow and was a Presenter at the University of Miami Evidence Symposium. Brett also served as member of the University of Miami Law Review Editorial Board. Brett was Vice-President of the Moot Court Board where he received multiple honors, including the “Outstanding Member” award, the George Washington University National Security Law Competition "Best Oral Advocate" award, and selection to the NACDL Trial Advocacy Team, in recognition of his achievements in advocacy.
Brett is the author of “Perry Mason Meets the Legitimate Tendency Standard of Admissibility (and doesn't like what he sees),” published in 55 University of Miami Law Review, vol. 4, has been acknowledged for his contributions by Kenneth W. Graham, Jr., 22 Wright & Miller’s Federal Practice & Procedure § 5180.1. Brett has been quoted on legal matters in the Miami Daily Business Review, the Plastic Surgery Practice Advisory, and the South Florida Business Journal.
Brett is a member of the Florida Bar, the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, Phi Delta Phi, the American Bar Association, and the Dade County Bar Association. Brett has represented clients in medical malpractice, breach of contract, bad faith, products liability and premises liability actions (among others) in both state and federal court.
